Proud to live in the USA, because one of the most important Human Rights anyone can enjoy is the FREEDOM OF SPEECH, not only to say it with our voice, but to print it, to express it. This artwork is dedicated to my native country VENEZUELA, who today is suffering in the hands of a DICTATOR that is inflicting repression in our people, and one way he uses to mutilate our democracy is by shutting off the media. Newspapers and Magazines have closed their operations for not having paper to print, because he has denied all these institutions to have access to the dollar, and therefore, there is no circulation today. People are fed up now, because of that and many other injustices, and have come out now to protest, giving their lives demanding for a more worthy way of living.

Madonna has confirmed Katy Perry as guest curator for Art for Freedom in 2014 for the month of January.
“I am so fortunate to have the freedom to express myself through music,” said Katy Perry. “Now I’m calling all of my incredibly creative KatyCats to use their talent to show Madonna and me how they express their freedom. I believe that 2014 can be a year of great social change. Together we can all stand up for Human Rights. Join the conversation, and let your art be your voice.”
As part of the Art For Freedom initiative, Katy Perry will work with Madonna to select an artist during the month of January whose creative expression demonstrates a unique view of the fight for human rights. Madonna will then award a $10,000 grant to a nonprofit organization of the artist’s choice.
Joy is the December winner of the $10,000 grant in support of the ALS Foundation.
I am one of the few women in the USA diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease). It was in April 2010 and I was 39. My daughter was 5. After the shock wore off, I decided either I could let the illness beat me down or I could make the best of it. It gave me my voice! Odd that such a debilitating terminal illness could open such freedom. I am more free now! I live in the present. I don't take my loved ones for granted. I'm still a mom. I still work. I still try to live my life while my body fails. When the time comes, I hope to also have the freedom to end it on my own terms.
